Commissioned in 1882 by New York perfume importer and mill owner W.S. Thomson, our granite structure opened in 1883 as the Grand Hotel, quickly earning the title of the largest single standing structure south of Denver. For nearly 25 years, our second floor served as the base of operations for the Town of Silverton and San Juan County, housing the local Post Office, town bank, Bureau of Mines, General Store, Doctor’s office, and the Silverton Standard Newspaper. After changing hands and a name to the Imperial Hotel, we underwent an extensive restoration led by the Harper family, owners of the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad, who purchased us in the spring of 2015. Now known as the Grand Imperial Hotel, we stand as a historic lodging option right in downtown Silverton, offering renovated rooms and a restaurant and saloon that reflect our gilded past. Guests stay in rooms refurbished with authentic late 1880s furniture and new bathrooms, immersing themselves in the beauty of the San Juan Mountains and the legacy of the boom town years.
