    About This Event

About the Tour: Join Master Naturalist and Medicinal Botanist Mary O’Brien as she illuminates the medicinal bounty hiding in the Routt National Forest. Due to the science-heavy nature of this program, only ages 18+ are allowed. Mary O'Brien has been studying and practicing herbal medicine since 1987. A Colorado native, she has lived in Steamboat Springs for over 20 years, where she teaches herbal medicine, makes herbal products, and maintains a medicinal garden for the Yampa River Botanic Park. Her journey has also led her to study the medicine wheel, sacred plant medicine, massage therapy, energy work, and permaculture. Through her teaching, she emphasizes the use of native, non-native, and locally grown plants to plant-based self-care and incorporates permaculture principles. She has studied with many renowned teachers and completed the Chartered Herbalist program with Dominion Herbal College. Where to Meet: We will meet at the Forest Service Office at 925 Weiss Drive at 8:15am to carpool/caravan to the trail. What to Expect: This route will cover ~5.5 miles with ~700 feet of elevation gain. What to Wear/Bring: Dress for the weather (current and future) and dress in layers! Many people like to wear long pants/sleeves to protect themselves from the sun, dirt, and things that might make them itchy (mosquitos, etc.). Avoid cotton when you’re able and go with a synthetic material or wool. Also remember to wear sturdy hiking shoes, good socks, a cool sun hat, and sunscreen! Be sure to pack 2 water bottles, snacks, sunscreen, extra layers, and your waterproof jacket- weather changes quickly, so make sure to prepare for cooler/wet weather. Please bring along any medications you may need, including epi-pens. This program has a 4-person minimum to run and will be canceled, with refunds, if we do not receive at least 4 registrations. If you have additional questions or need more information, please email hailey@yampatika.org or call the office at (970) 871-9151.
