Friday, May 1 \- Arrive at [Elkhead Reservoir State Park](https://cpw.state.co.us/state-parks/elkhead-reservoir-state-park/elkhead-reservoir-state-park-park-highlights), just a bit NE of Craig. Make your own reservations for May 1-3 (can reserve now); choose Pronghorn Campground on the west side of the lake. Electric hookups and bathrooms but no drinking water or showers available. Enjoy hiking and riding trails, a big beautiful lake, and camping here for two nights. Yes, this is the Elkhead area that was the subject of the December book club book!
Saturday, May 2, 7:00 AM - [Where the Hell's Maybell?](https://www.visitmoffatcounty.com/events/where-the-hells-maybell-bike-ride/) 30-mile FREE road ride event starting in Craig and ending in Maybell. Shuttles available to bring us back. Note that this link is for the 2025 event; I will update as 2026 becomes available.
Saturday, May 2, PM \- Drive along Hwy 318 to see the Gates of Lodore on the Green River \([1.5-mile hike](https://www.alltrails.com/trail/us/colorado/gates-of-lodore-nature-trail) to see the canyon). Continue driving NW on Hwy 318 to [Browns Park National Wildlife Refuge](https://www.fws.gov/refuge/browns-park) for a 7-mile hike and birding. Bring binocs! This will be a lot of driving; some may choose to do something different this afternoon.
Saturday Group Dinner at the campground - Bring something to contribute to Campfire Nachos and BYOB.
Sunday, May 3 AM \- Break camp\-\-unless you're staying longer\-\-and head to Maybell for the [Great American Horse Drive](https://www.sombrerohorses.com/horse-drive/). We'll watch as approximately 400 just-rounded-up ranch horses are pushed right through the middle of town. Food trucks, etc. available for this tiny town's biggest event of the year.
Sunday, May 3 PM \- Gravel ride in [Sand Wash Basin](https://www.sandwashbasin.com/) to view some of the approximately 500 wild horses there. Bring binocs! Variety of distances available on wide, smooth roads.
Sunday evening \- Head back to Grand Junction\, camp another night\, or continue on with your own adventures\.
