Uncompahgre Navigators isn’t an organization; it’s a concept. A way to create fertile ground where social and environmental groups can engage, discuss, and champion community-wide issues.
After holding our inaugural spring gathering of non-profit organizations, we are gearing up for the second quarter summer gathering.
Each quarter is hosted by 3 nonprofit organizations. This one will be hosted by Friends of the River Uncompahgre, Shepherd’s Hand, and Black Canyon Audubon Society.
A Chamber For Nonprofits
When asked why residents should attend, founder Wano Urbonas offers a memorable analogy.
He sees local nonprofits as the community’s organs – the heart, lungs, liver, eyes, and ears – each performing an important role.
Uncompahgre Navigators serves as the circulatory system.
“I think of it as the veins and arteries creating flow,” he says.
That flow matters because many volunteers are involved in multiple organizations. Conversations that begin around one issue often uncover opportunities to collaborate on another.
Someone volunteering with a river conservation group may discover shared interests with a housing nonprofit, arts organization, or neighborhood association. Connections form, ideas emerge, and new partnerships become possible.
The gatherings also provide an easy entry point for residents looking to volunteer, donate, or simply learn more about organizations serving the region.
Free attendance, appetizers, and cash bar.
