Arrive in Ouray and do a final gear check at the trailhead. The town's hot springs make for a perfect pre-hike soak. Stock up on last-minute supplies - the local outdoor store has everything you need.

The initial climb to the historic Camp Bird Mine sets the tone. This was one of Colorado's highest-producing gold mines. The stone foundations and rusting equipment tell stories of the area's hard-rock mining past.

Set up camp in Yankee Boy Basin, a massive alpine meadow surrounded by 13,000-foot peaks. The wildflowers in summer are spectacular. Listen for the whistle of marmots - they're everywhere up here.

The 13,114-foot Imogene Pass is the highlight of the trip. The trail follows the old mining road, with stunning views in every direction. Watch for pikas and ptarmigans in the talus fields.

Camp at the top of Ophir Pass with views of three states. The pass was named for the biblical land of gold, and the surrounding mountains still hold mineral wealth. Clear nights offer incredible stargazing.

The long descent into Telluride follows the San Miguel River. The trail passes through old mining claims and avalanche paths. Watch for the transition from alpine tundra to pine forest.

Reach Telluride and resupply at local shops. The town's mix of Victorian architecture and modern mountain culture creates a unique atmosphere. The free gondola ride to Mountain Village is a nice way to stretch your legs.

Camp near Bridal Veil Falls, one of Colorado's most photographed waterfalls. The 365-foot drop creates a constant mist that keeps the surrounding area lush and green.

The trail descends through aspen groves and past the remains of old mining cabins. Silverton was a major smelting center, and you can still see evidence of the area's industrial past.

Catch the historic Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad back to civilization. The train follows the same route that carried ore from the mines for over a century. A fitting end to a journey through mining history.
