American Lutheran Church

Ninety minutes of earnest worship unfold every Sunday at 9:30 am at American Lutheran Church in Grand Junction, a congregation that has called this city home for nearly 80 years. We take the Bible seriously but not literally, focusing on disrupting systems of captivity like racism, sexism, and homophobia rather than adhering to polished productions or stage lighting. Holy Communion is received every Sunday, inviting everyone to the Lord’s Table regardless of their background or familiarity with the ritual.

We co-create a culture of consent in our sacred spaces, asking before we touch and using appropriate pronouns. Children are genuinely welcome, whether they stay in the sanctuary or visit Dek, our paid childcare coordinator, who provides games, crafts, and snacks for elementary age and younger kids. All children are invited to chancel chat, a time when they discuss theology with Pastor Valerie in the sanctuary. We hold space for queer people, Indigenous people, Black people, People of Color, disabled people, and non-male people, believing these groups are essential to our understanding of God’s liberating love. A coffee bar sits ready in the sanctuary, and you are welcome to sit still, fidget, or struggle with singing. We are not for everyone, but we are here to argue about scripture, learn from you, and celebrate your sacredness.
