Phyllis Smilack has been preparing tax returns since 1970, bringing decades of Roaring Fork Valley experience to Crystal Springs Accounting. She and Solomon Smilack, both registered public accountants, lead the firm’s tax compliance and small business support services. Phyllis holds a B.A. and M.A. from the University of Michigan and attended Michigan Law School, while Solomon brings over 20 years of tax preparation experience, including managing operations for the non-profit Denver Asset Building Coalition where his team filed more than 5,000 returns annually. The practice specializes in individual and sole proprietor tax returns, amended filings, prior-year returns, and extensions. For business clients, the team manages bookkeeping using QuickBooks and handles payroll management. The firm focuses on identifying business and rental deductions to support growth through reporting and data analysis. Although the pandemic shifted operations to a virtual-only model, the accountants still prefer remote appointments via Zoom, FaceTime, Signal, or WhatsApp, with document transfers handled through email, Google Drive, or mail. In-person appointments remain available in Carbondale or Denver upon request. The firm does not currently accept new corporations, estates, or trusts.
