Primitive walk-in camping along the Eagle River defines the experience at Gypsum Campground, a site readily accessible from Interstate Highway 70 Exit 140. Open annually from May 15 through November 15, the campground operates on a first-come, first-served basis with no reservation system. Visitors access the river for picnicking, sightseeing, and wildlife viewing, where ducks, geese, blue herons, and bald eagles are common sights. The surrounding landscape features inactive volcanic craters and lava flows near Dotsero. Gravel roads lead to campsites, which cost $10 per night. Stay limits vary by season, allowing seven days from May to August and 14 days from September to November. Nearby activities include rafting and fishing, with floating season generally occurring from late May through July.
