Mancos State Park

The Jackson Gulch Dam, completed in 1948 by the Federal Bureau of Reclamation, creates the reservoir that defines Mancos State Park. This body of water serves as southwest Colorado’s primary destination for fishing, drawing anglers to its Gold Medal waters. The park sits near the San Juan Skyway, surrounded by the San Juan mountain range, offering a scenic backdrop for outdoor recreation. Established in 1987 as part of the Colorado State Parks system, the site preserves a landscape rich with history. Ancestral Puebloans inhabited this Four Corners region from 1 CE to 1300, leaving behind evidence of a population that once sustained thousands. The town’s name derives from a Spaniard injured near the Rio de los Mancos, or "river of the cripple," during expeditions between Santa Fe and Monterey in the 1600s. Following a post-World War II shift from ranching and lumber to tourism, the area developed into a hub for recreational activities. Today, visitors enjoy family-friendly amenities including parking and restrooms, making it an accessible spot for both residents and travelers exploring the Western Slope.
