About

Teddy Roosevelt’s June 3, 1905 proclamation created the nearly two million acres of National Forest that now surround Mavreeso Campground in Dolores, Colorado. This U.S. Forest Service site anchors a landscape defined by its historic and prehistoric legacy, featuring nearby archaeological sites, fire lookout towers, and old ranger stations. Many of the roads leading to and through the forest were built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), including structures like the Glade District administrative facility established in 1905 and the Aspen Guard Station built between 1938 and 1941. Visitors utilize the campground as a base for exploring extensive trail networks supporting hiking, biking, horseback riding, and OHV trail riding. The surrounding terrain also offers opportunities for fishing in rivers and lakes, boating, and snowmobiling. The site provides essential amenities including free wifi, parking, wheelchair accessibility, and a 24-hour front desk, ensuring comfort for travelers exploring the region's scenic areas and cultural sites.
