Paonia Park

The Paonia River Park transforms a former in-stream gravel mine into a lush recreation area along the North Fork of the Gunnison River. The Conservation Center completed the restoration project in 2013, turning the site into a healthy aquatic ecosystem with the help of the Minnesota Ditch & Reservoir Company. An interpretive trail system added in 2016 allows visitors to explore riparian habitat without disturbing wildlife. The park offers shaded picnic areas, an outdoor classroom, a boat launch, and a river viewing platform. An ADA compliant access ramp ensures accessibility for all guests. A one-mile trail winds through the landscape, providing ample space for walking and exploring. Visitors often come early to watch the valley wake up in sunlight or relax after swimming in the river. The park welcomes family, friends, and well-behaved dogs, though camping and overnight parking are not permitted. In April 2024, the River Park Chronolog station was installed near the bridge on the parking lot side. This timelapse project invites anyone to capture photos of environmental changes and submit them via email for public viewing. Beaver residents, who were washed out during high water levels in early 2023, returned by November and have been actively building dams and lodges. Their presence supports a diverse array of wildlife, including fish, amphibians, and birds, while enhancing water quality and mitigating flood impacts. The park stands as a testament to community collaboration and environmental stewardship.
