Piedra River Anglers

Jamie Aponte founded Piedra River Anglers to share his technical approach to fly fishing with anglers of all skill levels in Pagosa Springs, Colorado. His love for the sport began as a young boy fishing with his family in Puerto Rico and grew into an addiction during summers spent rafting, camping, and hiking in the Smoky Mountains. After finding Pagosa Springs by accident, Aponte decided to stay and spread his enthusiasm for conservation-minded fishing. The team includes Brad Rivas, a local native who hunts deer and elk and has been fly fishing for trout since childhood, as well as Bryan Smith, who brings southern charm and extensive knowledge from summers in Colorado and time in Bozeman, Montana. Together, they provide expert instruction on the water, ensuring that every trip offers more than just catching fish. A key part of their mission is supporting local conservation efforts through a partnership with the Four Corners Chapter of Safari Club International. This non-profit program stocks 4,000 to 8,000 fingerling cutthroat trout into public waters on the San Juan River annually. These fish are released as fingerlings to learn to feed independently, and many make their way upstream into the East Fork and West Fork of the San Juan River, where the physical makeup is ideal for spawning. Whether guiding beginners or expert world travelers, Piedra River Anglers combines technical expertise with a deep respect for the local ecosystem.
