About

A 1921 presidential patent signed by Warren G. Harding established Rifle Mountain Park, a rugged recreational hub just north of Rifle along County Road 217. The park’s primary draw is its extensive rock climbing infrastructure, featuring more than 250 bolted routes that attract climbers from across the globe. New climbing lines are added through a permitting process managed by the Rifle Climbers Coalition, including a developing area for beginners. Beyond climbing, the park provides primitive camping sites, hiking trails, and horseshoe pits for casual recreation. Visitors can reserve the community house or group area for gatherings, while day visitors utilize the picnic areas and designated parking zones. The site operates under specific rules, including quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m., a 20 mph speed limit, and leash requirements for dogs. Fires are permitted in designated rings, though they are prohibited during Red Flag Warnings. The park remains open year-round, offering a blend of geological history and outdoor activity in this corner of the Western Slope.
