Stevens Creek Campground
About
Fifty-three campsites line the north shore of Blue Mesa Reservoir, positioning this facility as the closest camping option to Gunnison within Curecanti National Recreation Area. The terrain defines a semi-arid, treeless shrubland where sagebrush scents drift through the air, all set at an elevation of 7,540 feet. Visitors find drinking water and picnic areas available from late May through mid-September, though the site lacks electric hookups. The shallow waters near the shore provide ideal conditions for stand-up paddleboarding, canoeing, and fishing, while the shallows also attract waterfowl for bird watching enthusiasts. Hikers can explore the 1.5-mile Neversink Trail, which meanders along the Gunnison River upstream of the reservoir. Further afield, the nearby Morrow Point and Crystal Reservoirs are framed by the steep cliffs of Black Canyon. A fish cleaning station operates during peak seasons, and quiet hours run from 10:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Cell phone coverage remains limited, allowing guests to disconnect from the digital world while enjoying the sunny, bright environment.
