About
Built in 1915 by Louis Sherbino and his son, our theater opened with its first show and dance in September of that year. We operate as the Ridgway Chautauqua Society, a nonprofit organization incorporated in 2012 to keep this historic space alive. Our building stands as a Colorado State Landmark, designated in 1991 for its significant role in the social and cultural heritage of Ridgway. We host a wide variety of events, including theater, music, film, speakers, comedy, and literary arts. Our history is rich with diverse uses: we have served as a roller-skating rink, a teepee and yurt factory, a film house, an illegal gambling hall, a post office, and a live music hall. Legend holds that Jack Dempsey even fought here during our early years. Located in historic downtown Ridgway, we remain a hub for community activities throughout Ouray County. We welcome the public to experience our high-quality programming and celebrate lifelong learning, arts, culture, and community.
