About this incident

The Stoner Mesa Fire has been burning along Stoner Creek and on Taylor Mesa. Fire behavior had been extreme early in the incident due to the prolonged lack of moisture, low humidity levels, strong shifting winds and lots of available fuel. Heavy rainfall in late August and into September has significantly reduced fire activity. Fire activity is now minimal, with only isolated pockets of heat. Crews are now focused on repairing firelines and roads in the fire area and removing equipment no longer needed.

The Stoner Mesa Fire area closure has been rescinded. Dangerous conditions may persist from fire-weakened trees and dangerous conditions during heavy rain.

Reminder: If you fly, we can’t. There is a Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) in place over the fire area through September 11, 2025.

The Stoner Mesa Fire has been burning along Stoner Creek and on Taylor Mesa. Heavy rainfall in late August significantly reduced fire activity, and firefighters have been constructing direct and indirect line in order to secure the fire and achieve incident objectives.
On the northern side of the perimeter the fire has been constrained by Stoner Creek and has not shown any movement in over two weeks. On the southwestern side crews have not completed containment lines between the fire and the community of Stoner should the fire become active again and move in that direction.
A Fire Area Forest Closure is in effect for the fire area, although the size of the closure was reduced on September 3, 2025. See the complete order and a map under the "Closures" tab on this site.

Firefighters implemented actions to keep the fire out of communities and private property along the Highway 145 and the County Road 38 (West Dolores) corridors. Structure protection groups assessed structures, limbed trees and trimmed grasses, and installed sprinkler systems to proactively protect structures. Some of that equipment is now being removed.

Fire behavior has been extreme due to the prolonged lack of moisture, low humidity levels, and strong, shifting winds. During afternoon/early evening burn periods there has been group tree torching and spotting ahead of the main fire. Access to much of the fire area has been limited, due to mountain topography, heavy fuel loading and fire intensity.
Firefighters are implementing actions intended to keep the fire out of communities and private property along the Highway 145 corridor and the County Road 38 corridor. Structure Protection groups are working in both corridors, assessing structures, limbing trees and trimming grasses and installing sprinkler systems to proactively protect structures potentially impacted by the fire.

The Stoner Mesa Fire is burning along Stoner Creek and on Taylor Mesa in mixed conifer with substantial dead standing and down trees. Fire behavior has been extreme due to the prolonged lack of moisture, low humidity levels, and strong, shifting winds. During afternoon/early evening burn periods there has been group tree torching and spotting ahead of the main fire. Access to much of the fire area has been limited, due to mountain topography, heavy fuel loading and fire intensity.
Firefighters are implementing actions intended to keep the fire out of communities and private property along the Highway 145 corridor and the County Road 38 corridor. Structure Protection groups are working in both corridors, assessing structures, limbing trees and trimming grasses and installing sprinkler systems to proactively protect structures potentially impacted by the fire.

The fire is estimated at 250-300 acres Tuesday evening. It is exhibiting extreme fire behavior, and growing to the east. The fire has not reached Stoner Creek at this time.
Dolores County has issued an evacuation order for San Juan National Forest lands on Stoner and Taylor Mesa. This includes Stoner Mesa Road (FS Road 686), Taylor Mesa Road (FS Road 545) as well as all roads branching off, Mavreeso Campground, Burro Bridge Campground, and West Dolores Campground. Dolores and Montezuma County Sheriffs Offices are coordinating this evacuation.
Resources on scene include multiple airtankers, an air attack aerial supervision plane, and two helicopters. Helicopters are flying roadways to assist in evacuating recreators. The fire is very remote and inaccessibility on foot or road due to heavy dead and down trees. As of Tuesday evening, the fire is still actively burning and demonstrating extreme fire behavior in mixed conifer and aspen forest.
