The San Juan Interagency Hotshot Crew completed a key section of handline in the Bald Eagle Mountain area, securing an important piece of the fire’s northern perimeter. Along the east side, from the powerline road down to the fish hatchery and into the bottom of Willow Creek, firefighters continue with indirect containment strategies. No heat was detected within 200 feet of the control line yesterday, and mop‑up continues to reinforce those gains. In the Mount Massive Wilderness, a small, specialized team, called a Wildland Fire Module, is actively extinguishing spot fires, addressing pockets of heat, and strengthening containment lines in the southwest corner. Suppression repair continues to be a larger focus across the incident, particularly from the northeast through the southeast portions of the fire

CURRENT SITUATION: Fire crews continue to make strong progress across the fire area as containment increases. Scattered thunderstorms on Friday produced lightning with only minimal precipitation, prompting some crews to temporarily disengage from their work to seek safe refuge. Suppression repair remains the primary focus on the southern portion of the fire toward Half Moon Creek, where crews are chipping vegetation along the contingency line. On the north side, near Bald Eagle Mountain, firefighters are strengthening containment lines and building additional depth. Suppression repair also continues along the eastern edge of the fire toward the fish hatchery. In the Mount Massive Wilderness, crews are concentrating on constructing minimum impact fireline and addressing spot fires as they appear. Interior pockets of heat persist throughout the fire area and may produce visible smoke, particularly during the warmer and drier parts of the day.

CURRENT SITUATION: Light precipitation fell yesterday over the fire area measuring upwards of 0.13 inches. In the area toward the fish hatchery, crews continue to build depth and secure those firelines. Minimal impact direct extinguishment strategies in the Mount Massive Wilderness are being utilized by crews to contain the western edge, addressing spot fires as they occur. Interior unburned islands continue to be consumed. Suppression repair work in the Bald Eagle Mountain and fish hatchery/Arkansas River is taking place. CURRENT SITUATION: Light precipitation fell yesterday over the fire area measuring upwards of 0.13 inches. In the area toward the fish hatchery, crews continue to build depth and secure those firelines. Minimal impact direct extinguishment strategies in the Mount Massive Wilderness are being utilized by crews to contain the western edge, addressing spot fires as they occur. Interior unburned islands continue to be consumed. Suppression repair work in the Bald Eagle Mountain and fish hatchery/Arkansas River is taking place. INITIAL SITUATION: The Willow Fire located approximately 6 miles west of Leadville, CO, started on June 28, 2026. Southwest Area Team 4, led by Incident Commander, Andrew Mandell, assumed command at 7:00 a.m. on June 30, 2026.

CURRENT SITUATION: Very light rain fell primarily on the Bald Eagle Mountain side of the fire on Wednesday. Thunderstorms produced lightning, requiring firefighters to temporarily disengage from firefighting operations due to safety. Significant rainfall is needed to penetrate the forest canopy and increase fuel moisture. The fire continues to move toward sparse, high-elevation fuels in the Mount Massive Wilderness. Interior fire activity was observed, including isolated torching as unburned islands of vegetation continued to consume. Smoke is still visible due to smoldering near the Fish Hatchery and along the southern end of the fire area. Crews continue to mop up and search for hotspots to extinguish. Firefighters continue building a contingency line in the southwestern portion of the fire. Vegetation is still being chipped in the Halfmoon Creek area. Suppression repair efforts have begun across the fire area, except on primary containment lines.

CURRENT SITUATION: The Willow Fire continues to consume available fuels inside the containment lines as firefighters work to strengthen and add depth to those lines. In the southeast portion, the fire slowly backed through fuels, supported by minor firing operations. In the southwest portion, the fire continued moving into higher elevations where fuels are scattered. Fire activity did increase at times when winds and receptive fuels were in alignment. The long-term drought and a critically dry fuel bed have played a significant role in wildfire vulnerability for this area. This recent minimal precipitation has done little to mitigate the issue. Firefighters will continue to use full suppression tactics.
