Flash Flood Safety for Western Colorado Residents

Understanding Flash Flood Risk in Western Colorado

    • Flash floods can occur within minutes to hours of heavy rainfall
    • Burn scars from wildfires are especially vulnerable
    • Canyon areas can funnel water and debris rapidly
    • Monsoon season (July-September) brings highest risk

    Western Colorado Flood Prone Areas

    • Glenwood Canyon (I-70 corridor)
    • Grand Junction area washes
    • Ouray and Silverton canyons
    • Uncompahgre River corridor near Montrose
    • Areas below recent wildfire burn scars

During a Flood Watch or Warning

    1. Stay informed through NOAA Weather Radio or local alerts
    2. Be prepared to evacuate quickly if necessary
    3. Move to higher ground immediately if flooding occurs
    4. Never attempt to walk, swim, or drive through flood waters
      • Just 6 inches of moving water can knock you down
      • 12 inches of water can float a vehicle

    After a Flood

    1. Return home only when authorities say it's safe
    2. Avoid flood water (may contain contaminants or debris)
    3. Document damage with photos for insurance claims
    4. Clean and disinfect everything that got wet
