Science Uncorked: Exploring Colorado Terroir

Presented by Charlotte Oliver, Extension Professor & Regional Specialist, Viticulture

Colorado is known for its towering mountains, frigid winters, weather that changes on a dime, and elevation. Grapevines are temperamental, tenacious things, but vineyard conditions change not only how vines grow but how they taste. With all that Colorado variability, how does all that impact our local wine? Join us to learn how the Grand Valley has shaped the flavor, or “terroir” of your favorite Colorado wines!

Charlotte Oliver received her Ph.D. in Plant Pathology with a focus on wine grapes from Virginia Tech in 2018. She took her position with CSU in 2022 where her primary role is interacting with the Colorado grape industry and providing timely educational resources for commercial and backyard grape growers. Her current program has several objectives: 1) fill in the educational gaps between research and CO grape growers, 2) evaluate the presence and distribution of grape diseases across the state, and 3) evaluate table grape production on the Western slope.
