Glenwood Springs Seizes Jackson Ranch Land for South Bridge

Glenwood Springs —The Glenwood Springs City Council used eminent domain to seize part of the Jackson Ranch for the South Bridge Road project. Family members call it a violation of their conservation easement and a threat to their 70-year home.

Deborah Williams thanked the Glenwood Springs Branch Library for its Local Author Showcase on July 25. Trary Lamee and staff managed tables and snacks for more than 20 writers. Connections formed. Books sold. Authors felt recognized.

Ron Sadler pointed to Activate America, a group encouraging voter outreach in swing states and districts. The organization empowers volunteers to contact voters via postcards, texts, and phone calls. Volunteers use provided training, scripts, and mailing lists. The goal is electing Democratic candidates focused on healthcare, climate action, reproductive freedom, and a fair economy.

The real friction point sits at the South Bridge crossing. The connector roads will bisect neighborhoods around Veltus Park and Sopris Elementary School. City Council prioritized the bridge itself. They have not given equal scrutiny to the connector roads’ impact on those neighborhoods.

The question is volume. Will hundreds, perhaps thousands, of additional vehicles travel through these residential areas daily?

Williams noted the disruption to a working cattle ranch. She cited significant environmental impacts alongside the loss of family land. The property has been home for more than 70 years.

Sadler argued that civic participation strengthens democracy. He noted many eligible voters remain disengaged or unsure how to participate. Activate America provides the tools. It does not require seasoned political operatives. Volunteers connect with friends, family, and strangers to boost turnout.

The South Bridge project is not just about crossing the river. It’s about who bears the cost of that crossing.

The Jackson family stands in the way of progress, or so the council decided. Eminent domain is a powerful tool. It does not ask permission. It takes what it needs.

Local authors get their showcase. Voters get their postcards. The ranchers get their lawsuits.

The South Bridge project moves forward despite these objections. The city argues the bridge is necessary. The family says the cost to their land and lifestyle is too high.
