Aspen —The stage lights at the Wheeler Opera House cut through the dark, illuminating two performers who are barely past the honeymoon phase of their marriage. It’s a counterintuitive pairing, isn’t it? We usually expect newlyweds to be settling into domesticity, buying matching dishware and planning their first anniversary trip. But Kelsey Cook and Chad Daniels are doing the opposite. They’re on the road, performing a couple’s comedy set titled “Notebook Rebuttal,” with Denver-based comedian Chris Voth opening the show on Sept. 3 at 8 p.m.

This isn’t just a casual date night gig; it’s the culmination of a whirlwind year that has defined their professional and personal lives. In the same week that the two were married in Spokane, Wash., Cook’s first Netflix special, “Happy Hour,” premiered on Aug. 18. The timing was no accident. As Cook noted, seeing her work trend on such a major platform was “so exciting,” marking a significant milestone in her career. Daniels, for his part, marked the occasion by surprising her with flowers and a homemade cake — a gesture of support she described as “a really, really wonderful feeling.”

Their approach to comedy reflects this dual focus on individual talent and shared experience. Onstage, they perform both separate sets and a joint set built on material about each other. “We have our own hour, which is whatever goes, but when we do the show together, we focus on jokes we’ve written about one another,” Daniels explained. This dynamic allows the audience to appreciate their distinct voices while also enjoying the chemistry that comes from living and working together.

The decision to tour together was driven by a simple desire to share their travels. “We just thought if we can travel to the same city once in a while, let’s do that,” Daniels said. This logic extends beyond the stage. They co-host the weekly “Pretend Problems” podcast, which launched in 2023. “We were living together, two comedians under one roof, and it felt kind of silly not to do a podcast together,” Cook said.

Their backgrounds further enrich this narrative. Daniels is a lifelong Minnesotan, a “diehard lover of Minnesota,” according to Cook. He has released eight comedy albums, including “Footprints on the Moon” (2017), which hit No. 2 on the charts and No. 1 on the iTunes comedy chart. He is also known for his Netflix special “Empty Nester” (2024) and his co-hosting of the podcast “Middle of Somewhere” with Cy Amundson. Cook, meanwhile, moved to Minnesota in 2023 and is still adjusting to the winters. Raised in Spokane, she graduated from Washington State University in 2011 and has since built a substantial following. Her 2023 comedy special, “The Hustler,” expanded her audience significantly. She has appeared on numerous high-profile shows, including “The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon,” “This is Not Happening,” and “Unprotected Sets.” She is also a world-champion foosball player and the star of the web series “Wrists of Fury.”

As they prepare for their upcoming European tour in October and November — what they’ve dubbed a “working honeymoon”, the sense of momentum is palpable. They’ve built what Cook calls their “dream life,” complete with a house and a menagerie of two dogs and two cats. But it’s the energy on stage that truly defines them. When the lights dim and the laughter starts, you can feel the connection between the performers and the audience. It’s fast-paced, sharp-witted, and deeply personal.
