The air in Carbondale still holds the crisp, thin chill of the high desert morning, the kind that bites at your knuckles as you unlock the gallery doors, but inside, the warmth is already building. It’s a quiet heat, generated not by the furnace, but by the weight of forty years of friendship between ceramicist Christine Anderson and abstract painter Benjamin Strawn, their work hanging side by side in “Kindred Spirits” at The Launchpad. You can feel it in the way the light catches the glaze on Anderson’s pieces, contrasting with the raw, sweeping strokes of Strawn’s canvases, a dialogue of texture and form that invites you to stand still and listen to the silence between the art.

That same sense of community connection is rippling out from the Roaring Fork Valley to the west, where the Rifle Rendezvous is preparing to turn the Garfield County Fairgrounds into a sprawling celebration of local history. It’s not just a car show and a carnival; it’s a reminder of how tightly knit these river towns have always been, bound together by the Colorado River and the shared rhythm of the seasons. The fairgrounds, located at 1001 Railroad Ave., are set to buzz from Friday evening through Sunday afternoon, with music spilling out into the evening air and the smell of carnival food mixing with the dust of the parking lots. Admission is free, though if you want to dive into the rides, advance tickets for the carnival are waiting at Rifle City Market and Alpine Bank for $35. It’s worth the drive, not just for the nostalgia, but to see how the community gathers to honor its own story.

Just down the road in Glenwood Springs, the focus shifts from celebration to safety, a necessary grounding for families who spend their weekends exploring the trails. The Valley View Kids Safety Fair returns on Saturday, transforming the hospital grounds at 1906 Blake Ave. into an interactive classroom. It’s easy to dismiss these events as routine, but look closer at the setup: fire truck tours that smell of diesel and polished metal, helmet fittings that ensure a snug fit for little heads, and the Kiwanis Bike Rodeo where kids practice balance and confidence. It’s practical, it’s free, and it’s essential for the folks who live here, where a bike ride to the grocery store is a daily reality.

For those seeking something quieter, something that engages the nervous system rather than the adrenaline, there’s the Horses + Sound Sensory Session at Smiling Goat Ranch in Carbondale. Led by Camilla Affelin, a certified biofield tuning practitioner, this workshop blends the “Horseboy Method” with biofield tuning, using tuning forks to help guests reconnect to a sense of safety. It’s a subtle, almost meditative experience, free for veterans and offered for a $50 suggested donation to the general public. You can feel the intention in the space, a deliberate slowing down of the pulse.

And for the young creators, the Bluebird Cafe in Glenwood Springs is hosting a Teen Jam & Open Mic on Sunday evening. It’s a chance for ages 13 to 19 to step into the light, instruments in hand, to connect with fellow music lovers in a space that feels like a living room for the soul. It’s free, it’s open, and it’s where the next generation of local talent finds its voice.

As the week winds down, the art will continue to speak. The Carbondale Arts Gallery will remain open through May 21, showcasing Gaby Oshiro’s “Material Haiku MMXXVI,” where destruction and creation balance on a knife’s edge, and the student work from Roaring Fork High School’s Visual Art and Woodworking Show, filling the library with surrealist drawings and handmade furniture. The smell of sawdust and oil paint will linger in the air, marking the labor of love that defines this valley.
