Rifle —Will the Roaring Fork Valley actually offer enough variety this weekend to keep a family from driving 40 miles to Denver for a proper Halloween experience?

For the most part, yes. The lineup from Oct. 30 through Nov. 8 is dense with free or low-cost options, but the quality of that variety depends entirely on your zip code and your tolerance for crowds. The Post Independent’s community calendar lists a dozen distinct events, ranging from free street festivals to $35 ticketed galas. Let’s look at the actual logistics, because "free" doesn't always mean "easy."

In Rifle, the city is betting big on a return to normalcy. The Rifle Police Department and Garfield County Libraries are teaming up for "Trunk or Treat" on Third Street and Railroad Avenue this Friday, Oct. 31, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. It’s free, it’s family-friendly, and it puts the city center back on the map for a few hours. For context, this is a direct response to years of scaled-back or cancelled events. You get candy upon request, decorated trunks, and "BOOths." No cost to the taxpayer’s pocket, just a bit of time in your car.

Meanwhile, Carbondale is splitting the difference between accessibility and commerce. Ascendigo Autism Services is holding its seventh annual Trunk or Treat at the Carbondale Town Hall from 4 to 6 p.m. Friday. This one is explicitly designed for neurodiverse kids, which means it’s structured and welcoming rather than chaotic. It’s free. If you have a child who gets overwhelmed by sensory overload, this is the one to go to.

But if you want a party, Carbondale has another option that costs money. Mountain Heart Brewery is hosting "Mummies and Deadies Night Out" from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at its taproom on Dolores Way. You’re looking at $12 per person, or $20 if you show up in a matching costume duo. There’s live music from Sweet Jessup and The Dirty Bucklets, plus a food truck. It’s a small venue, so expect it to fill up fast.

Rifle is also hosting the second annual Ghouls and Goblins Gala at The Ute Theater on Halloween night. This is an adults-only event (21+) with a 1990s theme. Tickets run $30 to $35, and you need to buy them in advance at utetheater.com. The vibe is a haunted house party with live music from Ninety Percent 90’s and costume contests for "scariest" and "sexiest." If you’re not into flannels and platform sneakers, this isn’t your event.

The calendar shifts tone in early November. On Friday, Nov. 6, Carbondale’s Fourth Street Plaza hosts the largest valleywide Dia de los Muertos celebration from 5 to 8 p.m. It’s free, and it marks the start of First Friday events in the valley.

In Glenwood Springs, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church is hosting a Ten Thousand Villages Fair Trade International Craft Fair all weekend. The proceeds go directly to artisans in 35 countries. It’s a chance to buy unique, handmade gifts using local and recycled materials without the markup of big-box stores.

The practical bottom line: If you’re in Rifle, you have a free morning option and a $30 evening option. If you’re in Carbondale, you have two free afternoon options and a $12 evening option. The only real cost is your time in traffic. Pick one, go early, and leave before the crowds peak.
