Vail Valley homeowners build outdoor kitchens with Bluetooth grills
Vail Valley residents are investing in high-end outdoor kitchens featuring Bluetooth-controlled grills and modular designs, transforming backyards into social destinations that blend gourmet cooking with mountain views.

Aspen —The smell of shish kabobs — layers of beef, onions, green peppers, and pineapple sizzling over an open flame — is the specific scent of summer in the Vail Valley. It is a sensory promise that the mountains offer more than just a view; they offer a stage for gathering, free from the sweltering humidity and biting insects that plague other regions. This is why so many locals are turning their backyards into culinary extensions of their homes, blending gourmet preparation with the glorious vistas that define this part of Colorado.
Andrew Bokol, senior salesperson at Maximum Comfort Pool and Spa in Vail, notes that people here are intent on maximizing their time outdoors. He observes that many residents come from other areas with different climates, and they are looking to replicate that outdoor lifestyle as fully as possible. To do this, they aren’t just buying a grill; they are designing entire outdoor kitchens that accommodate pre-cooked meats, appetizers, and drinks on ample countertop space.
The technology has caught up to the lifestyle. Jennifer Lance, co-owner of Alpine Valley Fireplace in Edwards, explains that modern grills often include digital thermometers connected to Bluetooth. You can turn the grill on, set it, and go back inside your house to monitor the temperature on your phone. This allows you to ensure the steak is getting to the exact heat you want without standing in the sun. It’s a small detail, but it changes how we interact with our cooking spaces.
These installations are built to withstand harsh sun and even winter snow, often made of stainless steel or incorporating stone. Modular systems offer flexibility, allowing homeowners to craft long, straight kitchens or L- and U-shapes. Wine coolers certified for outdoor use have become popular, as have kegerators and pizza ovens. Fire Magic sells a Bluetooth-controlled pizza oven through Alpine Valley Fireplace, which can double as a general outdoor oven when you don’t want to heat up the house.
There is also a social geometry to these designs. Many homeowners incorporate a bar into their outdoor kitchens, featuring a two-sided grill island punctuated with stools. This allows the grill master to face guests and interact while keeping an eye on the food. An outdoor television area allows guests to watch the game while steaks or burgers cook, and fire pits or fireplaces add warmth as the evening cools.
The result is a space that feels less like an extension of the house and more like a destination. You can feel it in the way people linger, not just for the meal, but for the act of making it. It reflects the valley’s unique climate and the community’s desire for connection, all served with a side of smoked flavor from wood chips heated by dedicated burners.
