On August 22, 2026, at approximately 12:08am, deputies with the Mesa County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the area of 636 Sun King Way on a report of a vandalism in progress. A reporting party stated that their vehicle was damaged by an unknown adult male subject. Deputies arrived in the area and contacted a male matching the description provided by witnesses. When deputies attempted to detain the male subject, he became physically uncooperative with the deputies. After he was detained, the male became unresponsive. Medical aid was provided immediately by the deputies on scene and medical personnel were dispatched to respond. The male was transported to the hospital for medical treatment and additional information on his condition is not available at this time.
The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office activated the 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team to conduct an investigation.
There is no on-going threat to the community and there is no further information available at this time.
It is important to note that this investigation is in the early stages, and this preliminary information is subject to change. Members of the Critical Incident Response Team will continue to conduct interviews of witnesses and involved persons in this case over the coming days. Additional details will be released as appropriate, with sensitivity to the ongoing investigation.
The Mesa County Sheriff’s Office will be responsible for releasing the names of their involved deputies, if and when appropriate. As is protocol with any critical incident, the deputies involved will be placed on administrative leave. An internal investigation will take place separately from the criminal investigation being conducted by the CIRT. This incident remains under investigation by the CIRT.
All critical incidents of this nature in Mesa County are investigated by the 21st Judicial District Critical Incident Response Team, which is comprised of representatives of the Grand Junction Police Department, Mesa County Sheriff’s Office, Fruita Police Department, Palisade Police Department, Colorado State Patrol, Colorado Department of Corrections, 21st Judicial District Attorney’s Office, and Colorado Bureau of Investigation. Because Mesa County Sheriff’s Office personnel were involved in this incident, the Grand Junction Police Department is leading this investigation on behalf of CIRT.
