Durango, CO: **The City of Durango has concluded its community feedback period for the temporary speed management demonstration projects installed this summer on Riverview Drive and Goeglein Gulch Road.

The community feedback period drew 429 contributions. A majority of participants at both locations expressed heightened concerns about safety and comfort, while approximately three out of ten respondents at each location perceived a reduction in travel speeds.

Both demonstrations have been removed, restoring the streets to their original configuration. The demonstration projects were required as part of the Safe Streets for All grant awarded to the city in 2023.

These temporary projects were designed to let residents, city services, emergency response providers, and commercial traffic experience potential traffic calming tools in Durango’s context to see what elements were successful, what elements could be refined, and opportunities where other speed management techniques could be impactful for Durango based on feedback received.

Throughout the demonstration period, the community shared input through multiple channels, including SeeClickFix submissions, emails and phone calls to staff, on-site conversations with residents, staff tabling events at the project locations and Farmer’s Market, Engage Page comments, and a public survey for people traveling through the project areas.

"We're grateful to everyone who took the time to share their experience and constructive feedback," Multimodal Manager Lily Oswald said. "Demonstration projects exist so we can learn what works and what doesn't on our streets before making longer-term investments. The feedback we received, including the concerns raised, is exactly the kind of information we need that will help guide the design of future roadway improvements."

Staff has drafted a community feedback summary to highlight key themes in feedback received through the midway public survey. These responses will be used alongside traffic speed and volume data and other feedback received during the demonstration period to understand what lessons can be applied to future speed management efforts in Durango.

A summary of the feedback and findings is now available on the project’s Engage Page at: https://engage.durangoco.gov/speed-management-plan
