Durango, CO: **The informal connection between the old high school building and the former Big Picture building used by pedestrians and cyclists has been permanently rerouted to the alley adjacent to the Police Department/City Hall project or through Buckley Park.
The path used to run through the parking lot between the old Big Picture building at 215 E. 12th St. and the old high school at 201 E. 12th St., connecting East Second Avenue between 12th and 13th streets. A cyclone fence has been installed as Phase 1 of the project is underway, and signs will be placed directing pedestrians and cyclists to the alley.
This phase of the project includes demolishing two smaller accessory buildings behind the old high school that are not on the historic register: the old boiler room facing 13th Street, and the old swimming pool building that was not part of the original high school. The historic high school is not being demolished. It is being renovated for use by city staff as a new City Hall.
With the exception of temporary utility work, all city streets, alleys, and sidewalks outside of the fence will remain open to the public.
Buckley Park will remain open during construction Primary construction access will be via 14th Street through East Second Avenue. The city and its contractors will provide ongoing updates and coordinate closely with neighboring residents.
Residents can learn more about the design plans at the Engage Durango Forum on October 27, where project partners will share details on the construction timeline and next steps.
