Grand Junction, CO - The Grand Junction Police Department (GJPD) is proud to recognize Forensic Science Week, observed September 20-26, 2026. This week highlights the invaluable contributions forensic science professionals make in public safety and criminal investigations.
The GJPD is privileged to have several team members who are part of the forensic community. These highly trained individuals perform a wide variety of tasks, including responding to crime scenes, processing and collecting evidence, and analyzing digital evidence, controlled substances, serology, and latent prints. These individuals usually work behind the scenes, carefully maintaining evidence and processing items long after an initial crime was committed. Their work is invaluable and helps investigators piece together critical details in criminal investigations.
Here are some of the ways the Grand Junction Police Department’s forensic science professionals serve our community:
GJPD evidence technicians oversee all items submitted to the department, averaging 1,737 items per month in 2025.
Technicians maintain and manage over 945,000 items of body-worn camera footage and other digital evidence.
Over the past 20 years, evidence submissions have increased by 150%, with the oldest case dating back to 1964.
GJPD chemists handle a heavy case load for agencies across the Western Slope, processing over 11,000 pieces of evidence for chemical substances in the past five years. They are the longest tenured chemists stationed at CBI and also assist with serology and digital evidence.
GJPD Digital Forensic Analysts processed approximately 62 TB of information in 2025.
The Grand Junction Police Department is proud to recognize Forensic Science Week and honor the expertise, dedication, and commitment of the forensic professionals who serve our department and community.
