Grand Junction, CO – On August 28, 2026, the Grand Junction Police Department (GJPD) was made aware of a social media post referencing the recent TikTok “Cat in the Hat” trend, indicating an individual may appear at West Middle School. The post also referenced the individual potentially showing up at random residences. The posts are intended to cause alarm and fear in individuals.
Out of an abundance of caution, the GJPD increased its presence at West Middle School and Grand Junction High School on Friday, August 28.
The Grand Junction Police Department, in coordination with Mesa County Valley School District 51 Safety and Security personnel, determined there was no credible threat to students, staff, or community, and continued to investigate this incident.
The Grand Junction Police Department identified the suspect as a 14-year-old student from Grand Junction High School and took him into custody on August 31, 2026. The juvenile was arrested and charged with Interference with Staff, Faculty, or Students of Educational Institutions and Harassment, and released to his parents.
In accordance with Colorado Open Records Act laws, no further information about the juvenile will be released.
GJPD takes reports involving school safety seriously and will continue working closely with our community partners to prioritize the safety and security of our students, staff, and schools. We urge students and community members to make reports to law enforcement or school personnel when they see or hear about something that sounds suspicious.
