Sizzle Without the Burn: UV Safety Awareness Month
July is the heart of summer. The perfect time for National Picnic Month, but also a critical reminder that it is UV Safety Awareness Month. While the sun provides us with Vitamin D and boosts our mood, its ultraviolet (UV) rays can be a silent party crasher if we aren’t prepared. Sun damage isn’t just about a painful burn today; it’s about protecting your skin from long-term damage and health risks tomorrow.
Here is how you can enjoy the great outdoors while keeping your skin safe.
Master the 4 S's this summer
To keep your summer fun from being cut short by a nasty burn, remember these four simple steps:
Slip on a shirt: Wear tightly woven clothing that covers your arms and legs. Look for UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) ratings on specialized outdoor gear.
Slop on the sunscreen: Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Don’t forget the most forgotten spots! These include your ears, the tops of your feet, and your scalp.
Slap on a hat: A wide-brimmed hat provides the best protection for your face, eyes, and neck.
Seek shade: Especially during the sun’s peak hours (typically 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM. If your shadow is shorter than you are, it’s time to find a tree or an umbrella.
Don’t forget your eyes:
Your skin isn’t the only thing that can get sunburned. Long-term exposure to UV rays can damage your vision.
Always wear sunglasses that provide 99% to 100% UV protection.
Wrap-around styles are even better as they block rays from the side.
The cloudy day myth:
Don’t let a gray sky fool you. Up to 80% of UV rays can pass through clouds. Even on a hazy day, you can still sustain a significant burn. Always check the UV Index on your local weather app before heading out to your picnic. If the index is 3 or higher, protection is a must!
