Safe Festivals is a 2026 San Miguel County public health partnership training over 300 staff and distributing naloxone to reduce festival harms.

The 2026 festival season brought a new effort to San Miguel County aimed at keeping festival-goers safe. The Safe Festivals program is a partnership between San Miguel County Public Health, the San Miguel County Sheriff’s Office, San Miguel Resource Center, the Telluride Marshal’s Department and the SAFE Bar Network, with a focus on preventing harassment, assault, overconsumption and other potentially harmful situations at local festivals.

The program kicked off ahead of the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and continued at major events throughout the summer. Festival staff, volunteers, security personnel, vendors and campground hosts received training on how to spot situations that may be cause for concern and what to do when they arise. That included active bystander and de-escalation training, recognizing predatory behavior and severe intoxication, and learning how to identify and respond to a possible overdose.

Safe Festivals wasn't limited to behind-the-scenes training. Staff were also on festival grounds throughout the summer, providing harm reduction supplies and information about local resources. The tables also gave festival-goers a place to go if they felt unsafe or uncomfortable or simply needed someone to talk to. More than 400 doses of naloxone, a medication that can quickly reverse an opioid overdose, were distributed over the course of the season.

By the end of the summer, more than 300 staff and volunteers at four festivals had participated in Safe Festivals training. With its first season complete, the program has created a framework that local agencies and festival organizers can continue building on to help make San Miguel County's busy festival season a little safer for everyone.
