At a glance

The Grand Junction Police Department urges drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians to slow down and stay alert to prevent crashes and reduce injuries.

Grand Junction, CO - Traffic safety takes all of us. Preventing crashes requires all road users to be alert, responsible, and look out for one another.

The Grand Junction Police Department urges everyone to slow down, stay focused, and make safe choices. Drivers, motorcyclists, bicyclists, and pedestrians all share responsibility for keeping our roadways safe. The goal is simple: to prevent crashes and reduce serious injuries and fatalities.

Drivers and Motorcyclists

Vehicles can cause devastating injuries in a crash, especially when pedestrians or bicyclists are involved. Help keep everyone safe by doing the following:

  • Slow down and stay alert for pedestrians, bicyclists, scooterists, and other motorists.

  • Eliminate distractions and keep your attention on the road.

  • Never pass a vehicle stopped at a crosswalk. A pedestrian that you can't see may be crossing.

  • Never drive or ride impaired.

  • Stop when a school bus has its flashing red lights activated and stop arm extended.

  • Obey posted speed limits and be aware of reduced speeds in school zones and construction zones.

  • Give bicyclists at least three feet of space when passing.

  • Check carefully for pedestrians and bicyclists before making right turns.

  • Watch for motorcycles, which are often more difficult to see.

Bicycle Safety

Bicyclists riding on the roadway have many of the same rights and responsibilities as motorists and are expected to follow traffic laws.

While Colorado law no longer requires cyclists to dismount before using a crosswalk, bicyclists are encouraged to dismount and walk their bicycles across whenever practical to improve visibility and reduce the risk of a collision.

Follow the Rules of the Road

  • Ride predictably and obey traffic laws.

  • Colorado law allows cyclists to treat stop signs as yield signs when safe and to proceed through a red light only after coming to a complete stop, yielding to all traffic, and determining it is safe to continue.

Ride with Traffic

  • Always ride in the same direction as vehicle traffic, even when riding on the sidewalk.

  • Never ride into oncoming traffic.

Be Visible

  • Use lights, reflectors, and other visibility equipment, especially at night.

  • Wear reflective clothing to increase visibility and safety.

  • A front light and rear reflector or light are required when riding on the roadway after dark.

Wear a Helmet

  • Wearing a properly fitted helmet is one of the simplest and most effective ways to reduce the risk of serious head injuries.

Use Extra Caution on Sidewalks

  • Although sidewalk riding is legal in many areas, it increases the risk of conflicts with pedestrians and vehicles entering or exiting driveways.

  • Stay alert and yield to pedestrians at all times.

Pedestrian Safety

Pedestrians also play an important role in roadway safety.

  • Use sidewalks whenever available. If there is no sidewalk, walk facing traffic and as far from vehicles as practical.

  • Cross at marked crosswalks or intersections whenever possible.

  • Before crossing, look in every direction, including for vehicles turning left or right.

  • Stay alert in parking lots and near driveways.

  • Parents should supervise young children and help them develop safe walking habits.

Traffic safety is a shared responsibility. By slowing down, staying alert, and looking out for one another, we can help everyone get where they're going safely.
