Steamboat Springs, Colorado-August 27, 2026- The City of Steamboat Springs will discontinue its relationship with Flock Safety and suspend the use of six fixed Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras.
The decision follows significant community input shared throughout recent weeks, including during a recent Civic Connections Town Hall hosted by the Steamboat Springs Police Department on August 25. The event drew strong attendance and featured a wide range of perspectives on ALPR technology and the city’s contracted vendor, Flock Safety.
After hearing directly from the community, along with conversations with city and police leadership, the City of Steamboat Springs plans to end its contract with Flock Safety and will immediately deactivate the six fixed Automated License Plate Reader (ALPR) cameras.
“We heard the community clearly,” said Police Chief Mark Beckett. “While technologies like ALPR systems can be effective in solving crimes, they are not worth employing if they do not have the support and trust of our residents.”
The safety of the Steamboat Springs community remains the police department’s top priority, and that includes ensuring that any technology used in public safety has the full trust and confidence of the people it serves.
City Council will discuss this topic during the September 8 work session.
