Durango, CO: **The waterslide in the aquatics area of the Durango Community Recreation Center is expected to reopen soon after being closed since May 13, when minor concrete deterioration and cracking were discovered during the annual inspection by the state.
The slide was closed immediately after the state’s inspection.
Out of caution, the city brought in an engineering firm to evaluate the slide. Engineers determined that the slide is structurally sound but asked the city to install some netting under the affected areas in the unlikely event that any flakes of concrete could come loose. Upon inspecting the netting and slide again, engineers determined that the slide was good to open and could remain so for 1-2 years before any repairs were necessary.
The city is waiting to reopen the slide until a state inspector can come and reevaluate the slide. City staff is keeping an eye on the situation to ensure the slide’s safe operation for the public, and making plans to address the cracks and flaking as soon as possible.
