About
The 409s and Point Lookout Loop is a difficult mountain biking route located in the Gunnison National Forest near Crested Butte, Colorado. The trail is accessible via the Brush Creek Trailhead, where parking is available. Riders drive out Brush Creek Road to the designated parking area left of the road before crossing the river. From there, the ride begins with a climb up Strand Hill doubletrack for approximately one mile to an intersection with Farris Creek Road. Continuing straight and crossing a cattle gate leads to the start of Trail 409. Trail 409 offers a challenging climb through trees and rocky sections before transitioning into smoother singletrack through meadows. At the top, riders connect to Point Lookout, a trail built by the Crested Butte Mountain Bike Association in 2014 to replace the eroded section of Trail 405. Point Lookout provides a gradual climb to the junction with Trail 409.5. Trail 409.5 descends quickly and is semi-technical. A key detail is that Trail 409.5 allows motorized travel, unlike the rest of the loop which is non-motorized. The route is rated difficult due to significant elevation gain and technical climbs. It is generally accessible from April through October, though conditions vary. No specific permits or fees are required for day-use riding in the Gunnison National Forest. Dogs are allowed but must be kept on a leash. The trail offers sweeping valley views and wildflower fields during peak season.
