Ajax Trail

The Ajax Trail is a 2-mile dirt path on the front side of Aspen Mountain, offering moderate difficulty and views of downtown Aspen. The trail begins at an elevation of 7,926 feet and rises to approximately 8,200 feet with a total elevation gain of roughly 300 feet. Hikers typically complete the route in about two hours. The trail is accessible from September through November, making it a suitable option for fall hiking. Parking is available at the trailhead. The path is dog-friendly, with requirements to keep pets leashed, particularly if using the Silver Queen gondola at the summit. The route connects with the Ute Trail, which is noted as the steepest section of the ascent. The surface consists of dirt and gravel, and the trail allows for hiking and running while excluding mountain bikes on this specific segment according to some local records, though others note it is shared. The Sundeck restaurant at the top provides refreshments.
