About
The Animas Mountain Loop is a 5.4 to 6-mile hiking trail located in Durango, Colorado, on the north side of town. The route offers approximately 1,700 feet of elevation gain and reaches a high point near 8,160 feet. Most hikers complete the loop in about three to four hours. The trail is rated as moderate to difficult due to the sustained climb, though it remains accessible year-round. The official loop follows a counter-clockwise lollipop pattern, starting with an ascent up a doubletrack before circling the mountain. Hikers encounter views of the Animas Valley, Hermosa, La Plata Mountains, and the Durango skyline. The trailhead includes parking and is marked with signs. Seasonal wildlife closures may apply to the upper loop from December 15 to April 15. Dogs are permitted but must be leashed.
