The Animas River is a 126-mile freestone trout stream located in Durango, Colorado, at an elevation of 6,500 feet. It is designated as Gold Medal water for a two-mile stretch within the city, known for large brown trout and state records. The river supports wild brown, rainbow, brook, and Colorado cutthroat trout. In Durango, the river is wide, reaching up to 100 feet, which allows for easy wading and bank fishing. Public access extends seven miles through town via bridges and the Animas River Trail, which leads north toward Purgatory Ski Resort. Parking is available, and the area is pet friendly. Fishing difficulty is moderate. The primary season runs from April through October, though guided trips operate year-round.
