About
The Animas River Trail is a paved, multi-use path in Durango, Colorado, running approximately 7 miles along the Animas River. It connects the northern, downtown, and southern sections of the city. The trail surface is primarily concrete or asphalt, making it suitable for hiking, walking, biking, and e-biking. It crosses eight bridges, passes under four streets via underpasses, and goes through one tunnel to the south end of city limits. The trail is accessible year-round, though winter conditions may require caution. Parking is available at multiple points, including Santa Rita Park, Schneider Park, Memorial Park, Rotary Park, the Durango Recreation Center, and various intersections along East 3rd Avenue. The trail offers access to river activities such as fishing, rafting, and kayaking. Wildlife visible along the route includes bald eagles, Cooper’s hawks, black-billed magpies, great blue herons, white-tailed deer, elk, American beavers, and turtles. The trail also features outdoor art, murals, mosaics, and sculptures. Dogs are permitted but must be kept on a leash.
