The Backbone trail is a challenging hike located near Gunnison, with difficult terrain that requires a good level of physical fitness. The trail is open year-round, from January through December, although winter conditions may require additional preparation and equipment such as crampons or snowshoes. Hikers can expect a strenuous route with significant elevation gain, and should be prepared for varying trail conditions.
