About
Big Canyon is a 1.7-mile singletrack mountain bike trail located in Durango, Colorado, on the Western Slope. Situated within the Grandview Ridge trail network near Horse Gulch and Telegraph, it sits at an elevation of 6,910 feet. The trail is classified as moderate difficulty and features fast-flowing packed dirt with sections of rocks and trees. It offers a steady descent, making it best ridden from north to south. Access is available via two main points. The most common entry is at the Horse Gulch Trailhead, reached by driving east on Highway 160 and turning left at Walmart. The alternative is the Three Springs route, accessible from parking near the hospital or in the business district, which offers a less steep climb. The trail connects to the Telegraph and Sidewinder trails, allowing for loop rides. The surface is primarily dry, though riders may cross a small stream multiple times during spring runoff. A banking rock wall near the bottom allows for high-speed riding. Parking is available at both trailheads, and the area is pet-friendly. Seasonal access runs from April through October. The trail is subject to winter wildlife closures by the BLM Tres Rios Field Office, typically from December 1 through April 30. Riders should verify conditions with the BLM office for potential early spring openings.
