The Blue River State Wildlife Area in Silverthorne offers a moderate hiking experience along the Blue River, suitable for visits from September through November. The area encompasses approximately 150 acres of protected land split into three units: the Blue River Unit, Eagle’s Nest Unit, and Sutton Unit. These properties lie upstream from Heeney and the Green Mountain Reservoir, positioned roughly halfway between Silverthorne and Kremmling. Hikers can expect a duration of about two hours on the trails, which traverse dense forests and offer mountain views. The terrain includes rushing waters and wildflowers, with specific wildlife viewing areas and informational kiosks located in the Blue River Unit. The Eagle’s Nest Unit is named for its frequent Bald Eagles, and visitors may also observe osprey, hummingbirds, titmice, deer, elk, fox, and moose. Access requires a valid hunting or fishing license, or an SWA pass for individuals aged 16 and older. Parking is available within the wildlife area, and pets are permitted. While camping is not allowed inside the SWA boundaries, the adjacent Blue River Campground in the White River National Forest offers first-come, first-served sites with vault toilets. The nearby Silverthorne Blue River Trail connects to the county-wide paved trail system, linking Silverthorne to Dillon, Keystone, Frisco, Breckenridge, and Vail Pass.
