About

Chip Off is a 100-foot single-pitch trad climb located in Cracked Canyon, near Ophir and Telluride on Colorado’s Western Slope. The route begins at a groove before a sharp arete and climbs left across textured slabs before moving up the arete itself. Climbers then traverse right onto a massive ledge to finish near a large tree used as an anchor. The climb is rated 5.9 PG13, placing it in the moderate category, though runout sections and exposure require confidence. Protection requires a full rack, as gear placements can be sparse. The approach involves navigating uneven dirt and rock paths through open, rocky plateaus with hardy pines. Parking is available, and pets are allowed. The area is accessible year-round. Climbers should prepare for a desert-mountain climate with quick weather shifts; early morning or late afternoon is recommended to avoid harsh midday sun. Water is not naturally available on-site, so hikers must carry their own.
