About

The Cinnamon Mountain Out-and-Back is a moderate, short hike located in Crested Butte, Colorado. The trail spans approximately 2 miles round-trip with an elevation gain of roughly 1,000 feet. Starting from a trailhead elevation near 11,330 feet, the route climbs steeply to a bench before following contours around the mountain. Hikers can choose between a shorter, steeper left path or a mellow right path to reach the ridge and summit at 12,290 feet. The trail is well-defined for most of the distance and features loose rock sections near the summit. Parking is available at the trailhead, though access roads vary in difficulty; Washington Gulch offers an AWD-friendly route while the Slate River Road requires high-clearance 4x4 vehicles. The hike typically takes about one hour to complete. Wildflowers are present, and wildlife sightings including deer, sage grouse, and small birds are possible. A weather station operated by the Roaring Fork Mountain Railway sits at the summit, which offers 360-degree views of surrounding peaks and valleys. The trail is accessible year-round, with winter conditions requiring traction devices and warm clothing.
