The Waunita Watchable Wildlife Area near Gunnison is a designated state wildlife area focused on observing Gunnison sage-grouse. Located approximately 19 miles east of Gunnison on County Road 887, the site is a small one-quarter acre plot managed by Colorado Parks and Wildlife. The primary activity is watching sage-grouse lekking, which occurs during specific spring windows from April 1 to April 30. Access is restricted to designated open days, with closures typically occurring between April 11 and 19. Visitors must remain in their vehicles during these viewing periods to avoid disturbing the birds. A valid hunting or fishing license, or a State Wildlife Area pass, is required for all visitors aged 16 and older. The site offers on-site parking and a viewing trailer suitable for use with personal spotting scopes. While the area is open year-round, wildlife activity and access rules are most relevant during the spring lekking season. The moderate difficulty reflects the ease of vehicle-based observation, though visitors should be prepared for potential uneven terrain around the parking and trailer areas. Pets are permitted, and the site practices Leave No Trace principles.
