About

The Cool Rock Canyon Trail is a moderate 2.4-mile hike in the Gunnison Gorge National Conservation Area near Delta, Colorado. The trail follows a dry creek bed through a sandstone canyon with visible rock formations. Hikers traverse sandy terrain and encounter non-technical scrambling sections that may require using hands and feet, particularly where the trail enters the gorge. The route extends approximately two miles to a fence line, which serves as the turnaround point for this section. Access requires navigating a rough gravel road to the trailhead, making high-clearance or four-wheel-drive vehicles advisable during dry conditions. Parking is available in a designated lot near the trailhead. The trail allows hiking, dogs, and horses but excludes bikes and motorcycles. There are no restrooms or drinking water at the site. The typical season for this activity is September through November, offering mild weather and changed foliage. The elevation ranges from 5,079 to 5,936 feet with a gain of about 857 feet. The trail is managed by the BLM Uncompahgre Field Office and lies within a wilderness area. Wildlife in the vicinity includes mule deer, elk, mountain lions, bighorn sheep, and river otters. The Gunnison River nearby is a designated Gold Medal Trout Fishery.
