Der Squeal

Der Squeal is a sport climbing route located in Rifle Mountain Park on the Western Slope. The route sits on the very rightmost section of the Bauhaus Wall, climbing an overhanging panel of white rock immediately right of Der Stihl. GPS coordinates are 39.71552, -107.69174. The climb is classified as difficult and requires a high level of skill. The first ascent was by Hassan Saab. The route features a distinctive hanging death block that climbers must dyno to; this block is wedged in far enough to be nearly impossible to pry out, is hollow and cracked on all sides, and was noted as removed in later updates. The bottom section is powerful and sustained on good pockets, leading to a crimpy sequence below the block. Climbers must kneebar behind the block and clip off it before tackling a tricky crux above the roof and block. The route ends on a short, flakey headwall with anchors. Protection requires 10 to 14 quickdraws. Access is managed by the city of Rifle, requiring a daily or season entry pass. Parking is available at designated areas within the park.
