About

Downtown Brown is a sport climbing area in Montrose, Colorado, situated at an elevation of 6,282 feet. The site features routes rated as difficult, making it suitable for experienced climbers. Access is available year-round with on-site parking and pet-friendly policies. The primary route, CriticalGold Mountain Fire, is a 45-foot sport climb characterized by thoughtful, bouldery climbing. It begins just right of the Jugfest arete and includes a low crux after the first bolt. The route utilizes four bolts for protection and concludes with a two-bolt anchor. While the hardware is described as old, it remains functional. The area offers a dry climate and moderate elevation, allowing for climbing from January through December. Climbers typically spend around four hours exploring the routes. The site is distinct from the larger Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park, which lies nearby and offers more extreme multi-pitch options. Downtown Brown provides a local alternative with accessible sport routes.
