About

Elbert Creek is a mountain biking trail system near Durango, Colorado, split into two main sections by Forest Road 581. The east section descends from the road to a parking area near the Needles Conoco gas station on Highway 550. This segment is primarily ridden downhill, though uphill travel requires hiking the bike in steep spots. The west section connects to the Hermosa Creek area and is less traveled. Riders typically traverse the west section east to west, ending near the Big Bend trail and the Hermosa Creek bridge. The trail is rated difficult with a hard overall physical rating. Elevation gain is significant, with one source citing a 1,318-foot climb and another noting the trailhead begins above 8,500 feet while Durango sits at 6,512 feet. The landscape transitions from desert sagebrush and scrub oak to aspen groves and alpine meadows. Parking is available at the trailhead. The trail is accessible from April through October. Pets are allowed. The route is approximately 3.2 miles long with an estimated duration of about one hour. Riders should be prepared for loose boulders, cobbles, downed trees, and overgrown vegetation. Navigation aids such as GPS tracks or the MTB Project app are recommended for the west section due to potential confusion.
