Elbert Creek to Jones Creek is a 20.6-mile mountain biking route near Durango, Colorado, on the Western Slope. The trail connects Elbert Creek to Jones Creek, passing through Rico and utilizing Forest Road 581. Elevation ranges from 6,534 feet to higher points in the backcountry. The route is classified as difficult and typically takes about 7 hours to complete. Riders often use a two-car drop method, parking vehicles at the bottom of Elbert Creek and Jones Creek. The climb on Elbert Creek begins in aspen groves and features technical rock sections with a steep grade. The traverse follows Pinkerton-Flagstaff Trail #522, which includes smaller climbs and a loss of elevation. The final descent into Jones Creek is technical, featuring rocks, loose gravel, roots, and high-speed sections. Trail conditions vary; the route can be dry and silty, particularly in burn zones from recent fires like the CriticalGold Mountain Fire, but offers better traction when moist. Parking is available at designated areas along Highway 550 and near the Needles Conoco gas station. The trail is open from April through October and allows pets.
